This is a great opportunity for you to use your strong coding skills to work with large, complex and interesting data sets and be a thought leader for the delivery of business information to Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency and the wider transport sector. This role has a great balance of both hands-on data analysis and a strategic focus, so you will be comfortable with operational effectiveness as well as providing a big picture perspective.
The successful applicant will provide leadership and expertise in the development of best practice analysis and interpretation methods to ensure the quality of information and reporting using Waka Kotahi data.
Positively influencing Waka Kotahi's strategic objectives by contributing to the provision of high quality, well researched and reasoned data and analysis is key. This is a senior technical leader role in the specialist Data Services team, which is part of the wider Research and Analytics team that is a key part of the Corporate Support group.
Supporting the continuous improvement of data and analytics processes, practices, and products, you will work to increase the team's data and analytics maturity. You will play a key role in identifying opportunities to use data analysis more widely and more effectively throughout the Agency and by the provision of open data.
With your highly developed communication and relationship building skills, you will develop key relationships to position the team as a strategic partner.
It will also be important for you to maintain a good understanding of the latest developments in the field of data and analytics and their use in the transport sector.

What we are looking for:
Our environment can be both dynamic and challenging. Therefore, we are looking for an enthusiastic, highly skilled professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and has:
- Experience in a similar role, working in an analytical environment undertaking complex data queries from multiple large databases in a flexible way
- Proven recent experience in coding and using large, complex data sets
- Solid experience in data manipulation and analysis, and turning raw data into valuable and relevant intelligence and insights
- Sound understanding of Government Open Data initiatives
- Sound understanding of the principals of the Official Information and Privacy Acts
- Advanced level of computing skill including the use of SQL and R/Python (or similar analytical tool)
- Experience with visualisation tools e.g. Power BI (or similar)
- Experience in mentoring and coaching
- Demonstrable ability to think strategically and to see the bigger picture
- A relevant graduate qualification in the statistics, or similar discipline requiring the analysis of complex data is preferred
