The NZ Transport Agency shapes New Zealand's transport networks and people's safe and efficient use of them. We keep people and goods on the move by working with others to invest over $3 billion a year on our road and rail networks. The focus of the System Design and Delivery is on designing and delivering an integrated transport system – one that reflects the plans and priorities of the Transport Agency and its partners.

The purpose of the Principal Planner role is to provide effective leadership and expertise in statutory approvals and provide support across the Transport Agency for statutory consents and approvals.

This role has great scope for building and working with key local stakeholders. You'll be dealing with everything from RMA applications to members of the public seeing approvals and consents. You'll act in a project management capacity for the consenting strategy approval workstream and demonstrate your leadership in consenting work and continuous improvement.

To be successful in this role you will bring

  • At least 10 years experience in a related role
  • A comprehensive understanding of the Resource Management (RMA) Act regulatory process and an ability to communicate that process to non-RMA experienced people
  • Experience in other relevant statutes including Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga (HNZPT) Act, Wildlife Act and Conservation Act
  • Experience in drafting submissions and evidence, and presenting evidence at hearings, including environment court hearings.
  • Proven experience working with internal and external stakeholders and managing relationships, including undertaking community consultation and engagement
  • The ability to provide regional oversight of consent compliance.
  • An understanding of the transport sector across the transport planning, construction and network management lifecycles.
  • The ability to tailor communication styles appropriately to different audiences and situations
  • Project management skills to enable workload management
  • Excellent problem solving skills and ability to use rigorous logic and methods
